Some English stuff for everyone

This is my first entry since holy week (and even earlier I suppose) this year. But since I got hold of the material below, I remembered this blog since I notice that people have contacted me through this blog for various needs: counseling, follow up of the Counseling world in the Philippines, even requests for advertising certain relevant events, spam-able materials in my email box which I DELETE forever IMMEDIATELY, and other stuff. We really are in the third millenium which offers trillions of possibilities to contact people we need at the click of the finger. It is really our NEED that stirs us to look for those who are willing to be reached out to. Hence, if there is anything I may do for you, there are ways for that. Welcome!

Thanks to a friend who forwarded this matter below. Let's have some educational moments to understand ourselves and others. I bet we really need to brush our brains every now and then (read: updating) particularly in the light of the following facts: there may be very few Guidance Counselors doing Guidance and Counseling legitimately this coming school year because not many have been licensed (didn't I foresee that? hehe). The other may yet be a fact (I really hope I am mistaken here): very few taking the Board exams for the GC profession due to the absence of clear guidelines as to the requirements. I don't have to say anything anymore on this matter particularly since there is really wisdom in what Jesus Christ said: "Throw not your pearls to pigs." And of course, we will have schools where a common problem would be finances: specially since many students may have parents who have saved their money in pre-need firms that have been suspended or grounded if not revoked by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The lesson is altogether clear for all of us: if money rules our minds, we will be its slaves. Till Debt Do Us Part, as the book by Chinkee Tan (2008) says so clearly.

Anyway, enjoy the following VERY INTERESTING STUFF:

In the 1400's a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence we have 'the rule of thumb'

Many years ago in Scotland , a new game was invented. It was ruled 'Gentlemen
Only...Ladies Forbidden'.. .and thus, the word GOLF entered into the English language.

------------

The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time TV was Fred and Wilma
Flintstone.

------------

Every day more money is printed for Monopoly than the U.S. Treasury. (now you understand why the economies have floundered - they must have really thought they had all the millions of MONOPOLY money!)

------------

Men can read smaller print than women can; women can hear better. (I once attended a talk by the Sue's of the US who did research on the gender differences through language. Guess what they discovered? Men learn faster by speaking a word once or a few times, while women need to say the same word in more times to learn it. Kaya pala...)

Coca-Cola was originally green. (YUCK!)

------------

It is impossible to lick your elbow.

------------

The State with the highest percentage of people who walk to work: Alaska

------------

The percentage of Africa that is wilderness: 28% (now get this...)

The percentage of North America that is wilderness: 38%

------------

The cost of raising a medium-size dog to the age of eleven: $16,400

------------

The average number of people airborne over the U.S. in any given hour: 61,000

------------

Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in their hair..And Very, Very High Foreheads (Kaya pala Nanay ko matalino hehe, although I still have to submit a strand of her hair for chemical composition testing - pumayag kaya siya?)

The first novel ever written on a typewriter, Tom Sawyer.

The San Francisco Cable cars are the only mobile National Monuments.

Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king from history: (This one is good.)

Spades - King David

Hearts - Charlemagne

Clubs -Alexander, the Great

Diamonds - Julius Caesar

111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987, 654,321 (I love this!)

If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air,
the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died because of wounds received in battle. If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes. (This one is very informative!)

Only two people signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, John Hancock
and Charles Thomson. Most of the rest signed on August 2, but the last signature wasn't added until 5 years later.

------------

Q.. If you were to spell out numbers, how far would you have to go until you
would find the letter 'A'?

A. One thousand (kasi naman the letter A appears only in the word thousand. Ganun? O sige nga? one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven...hanggang ninehundred ninety nine...may A ba sa mga words na yan?) Pang IQ test ito a!)

------------

Q. What do bulletproof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers and laser printers have in common?

A. All were invented by women.
(I need to verify this pa! But anyway, congratulations to these very genuinely creative life-protecting members of the human race. I bet they are simply telling us what their wombs were for, our first most secure refuge in our development. In a Discovery Channel documentary I use for my Developmental psychology class: the best hotel there ever will be in the world: the womb! Why? because it's for FREE, and we don't need to do anything! A really relaxing place no Boracay can match. Thanks to all mothers! Happy mother's Day in advance. God bless and please take care!)

A. Father's Day (kawawang Dad. Mine does not like to answer phone calls. He wants his children to see him personally if we want to talk to him. How sweet naman no? Now you know where I got that sweetness hehe))

In Shakespeare' s time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes, the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase...'Goodnight , sleep tight'

------------

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the
wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts... So in old England , when
customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them 'Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down.'

It's where we get the phrase 'mind your P's and Q's'

------------

Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or
handle, of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. 'Wet your whistle' is the phrase inspired by this practice.

5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they
don't have e-mail addresses.

6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is
